We recently posted this new-old photo of Fire Prevention division members to our Facebook page. The picture is circa mid or late 1950s. Today the division is called the Office of the Fire Marshal.
The members are standing at Station 1, where their offices were located. Left to right are B.T. Fowler, Jack Wall, H. Bagwell Williams, A.R. Woodlief, and John Holmes. Most or all of these men spent most of their careers in the Fire Prevention division. We’re still researching that topic.
- Fowler retired as a Captain in 1986 with 35 years of service.
- Wall retired as a Captain in 1980 with 29.6 years of service.
- Williams retired as a Captain in 1977 with 31 years of service.
- Woodlief retired as Fire Marshal in 1979 with 27.5 years of service.
- Holmes died off-duty in 1977. He was Fire Marshal and had 25.6 years of service.
Look closely and you’ll also see the second piece of the Raleigh Emergency Rescue Squad, the precursor to today’s RFD heavy rescue company. The unit operated a small panel van as its main unit and a larger Civil Defense rescue truck, for special calls.
