Our historian recently came across these fantastic new-old pictures of apparatus at Station 1 on South Dawson street. They’re scans of negatives by local Durham-based fire buff Jon Umbdenstock and likely taken between January 13, 1987, and March 16, 1987.
What’s shown here? We interpret as Engine 3 and Truck 5 leaving Station 1, after likely providing coverage for Engine 1, Engine 13 (shown), and Truck 1 (shown). Also shown is Engine 2, likely passing the station on their way back to quarters farther south. One of the city’s two rescue trucks is also shown, in the apron. Likely Rescue 7.
You’ll also see a few familiar faces in these pictures. Looks like Captain Charlie Narron through the bay window, and Tony Matthews and maybe James Allen in the cab of the rescue. Who else do you recognize?
We will add these and other recent finds to our Flickr page and the albums of historical photos located there.
