Raleigh Fire Department Lieutenant Brent Upton, who died of cancer in March 17, 2021, will be honored at the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial event in downtown Raleigh on Saturday, May 7. The memorial weekend events also include a candlelight service on Friday night and a fire truck parade on Saturday morning.
Lt. Upton, 38, died of occupational cancer two years after a medical retirement. He had served 12 years and retired after six months of chemotherapy, which followed a diagnosis of esophageal cancer in May 2018. The North Carolina Industrial Commission recognized his passing as a line-of-duty death in October 2021.
