Mangel's Building at 120 Fayetteville Street Mall on July 7, 1981. Fire started in old
department store building just before 9:00 a.m. on a weekday. The two-story building was divided into
two main businesses and ten smaller ones. The fire raged for three hours, and the exterior wall
collapsed about 11:00 a.m. Eleven firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. More than 100
firefighters battled the blaze, including 21 recruits. Units included E1, E3, T1 at 8:50 a.m.
