RALEIGH - The Raleigh Fire Department celebrated 100 years as a career fire department with an all-day
celebration in downtown Raleigh on Saturday, June 16.
The event opened with a parade at 10:00 a.m. that started on Hillsborough Street
and ended on Fayetteville Street. The parade was followed by a series of
activities in the parking lots at the end of Fayetteville Street, including an
apparatus muster with static displays and live pumping, the firing and pumping
of Raleigh's 1905 American LaFrance steam engine, a series of four firefighter
challenges (games) with competing teams, a Kidde Kid's Zone with numerous
activities for children including a Home Depot Kid's Clinic, and a tent with
displays from the Raleigh Fire Museum, fire prevention materials, centennial
merchandise for sale, and birthday cake provided by the Raleigh Professional
Fire Firefighters Association.
